It was over 25 years later in the late 80's that Mercury Gardens was finally extended under the railway line towards the Army recruitment building. It brought an end to the Wacky racers circuit that went from Mercury Gdns then into Eastern Road , up South St. and then along Western Road to complete the circuit with pose points at the entrance to the Western Road multi storey and opposite Lambourne house. Cooking fat corner was from Ratners by the NewsHut to the junction of Chandlers Way for some extra fun and giggles.😂

I remember where the market stalls were there was a hall and some saturdays they had rummage sales, we played there many times and normally had to help get all the unsold stuff out so that we could set up our equipment, around '66 time l think, most of my life was a blur then....................

Amazing seeing the uniform fleet of RT family buses working LT red, green and Green Line buses. It all looked so ordered. People moving quickly and lightly around a very busy town centre. Whether you think it was worse or better than today, it was certainly poles apart from modern Romford. Such changes over such a short period of time. I doubt many generations of people have seen such vast changes in a lifetime.

Well they certainly stopped the traffic and all the business. Romford is dead. Looking at the Goldern Lion junction, one solution was surley to limit the sheer numbr of buses and to change the route so not turning right into South Street. The history Romford had in the market was torn apart and these people should have been prosecuted.

This was back then when Romford was in Essex before being part of Greater London, although it was attached sooner within the conurbation area with the County of London as the city's suburbs grew.

My mum and dad would bring me here for shopping trips. I used to love Romford back in the early 1960s. A bygone age we don't appreciate what we have until it is gone. I wouldn't have fancied driving in South Street and North Street then. It looks nerve-wracking!!!

Thanks for posting. Vehicles particularly interesting. Did not see much of the town center back then sadly? Very nicely done and survives its age rather well? Pretty sure they would all have been horrified at becoming part of Greater London in only 13 years time... Noticed some pronunciations I was not familiar with too (i.e. Corbets Tey). That might be ignorance on my part though?

There are times when I feel nostalgic about this place. I was born there in 1937 and left in 1972 to live in Cornwall, where I have been ever since! I have never been back, and on the rare occasion I think about doing so, I am restrained in the knowledge that with so much change I would probably not recognise it! Don't get me wrong, things have to change, but whereas some change is good not all of it is! Trouble is that as you get older you tend to look back with rose coloured glasses, and whilst nostalgia isn't bad, you sometimes need to take those glasses off and face reality, no matter what you think about it! So do I go back for a visit? On balance probably not, but if I happened to find myself in Essex I might take a peek, before scurrying back to the land of pasties and cream!

I was born in Romford in 1961, when it was in Essex but populated largely by East Enders who had survived the war and the Blitz, like my Dad. It had a vibrancy to it and a special character. There is no doubt in my mind it was better then than it is now. Yes I am nostalgic, but I also don’t think I’m wrong.

Not sure why it's a backhanded compliment if people want to come here to better their skills in your language and provide their skills to your economy? Besides we did colonise a quarter of the world at one point and force people to learn English, kind of just desserts if you're anti-migration.
